VIDEO: COVID-19 puts pressure on supply chains

As the pandemic drags into its second year, COVID-19 has affected not only the world’s health but every point in a weakening global supply chain.

As employees shifted into working from home and lockdowns became the norm, the worldwide shipping industry and e-commerce went into overdrive as consumers emptied local grocery shelves. But even as vaccines became more widespread and restrictions eased up, pressure on supply chains did not diminish.

CanaData speaker and Altus Group senior director of cost and project management David Schoonjans has pointed to an increased need for firms to improve their risk management when faced with not only supply chain disruption but possible future lockdowns and virus variants.

Economic Development Canada chief economist Peter Hall also noted shipping containers are increasingly difficult to obtain, exacerbating the problem and pushing costs upward.

Thus far, there doesn’t seem to be an endpoint to the supply chain crisis.
