The Masonry Contractors Association of Alberta acknowledged the best projects in their craft with a recent 2011 Masonry Design Awards gala in Calgary.

The Masonry Contractors Association of Alberta acknowledged the best projects in their craft with a recent 2011 Masonry Design Awards gala in Calgary.

“These projects are a testament to the excellent masonry design that happens every day in Alberta,” said Dave Kelly, former City TV host and TV personality who emceed the event.

The awards are only held every second year and this year’s theme was celebrating architecture in masonry.

There was an honourable mention, an Award of Merit and an Award of Excellence in a number of categories. A President’s Award was also presented.

Pockar Masonry Ltd. was the big winner on the night.

The Calgary-based company took home seven different awards, including the Award of Excellence in the commercial category for the Water Centre in Calgary.

“This very contemporary, LEED Gold building addresses its site through an elegant use of standard masonry units, curtain wall and wood interiors,” the judges said.

The company also earned an Award of Merit in the same category for its work on the Stampede Station-Phase 1. The judges said it was a successful integration of masonry with glass and steel.

The honourable mention went to K. Hansen Masonry for Firehall No. 11 in Edmonton.

Pockar Masonry kept its winning streak alive by sharing the educational/institutional Award of Excellence with Gracom Masonry and Thibeault Masonry Ltd. for work on the Pine Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.

“An elegant use of standard masonry units set the foundation for the contemporary glass and metal panel exterior,” the judges said.

Scorpio Masonry (Northern) Inc. took home the Award of Merit for its work on the Royal Alexandra Hospital – Robbins Pavilion.

Pockar Masonry also earned the honourable mention in the category for Gasoline Alley at Heritage Park.

The Award of Excellence in the multi-family residential category went to Aurora Masonry for Riverside Quays.

The judges said that the masonry forms a key element in the modulation of the various masses of this residential complex.

The Award of Merit again went to Pockar Masonry for Five West, a Calgary residential highrise project.

The honourable mention also went to Pockar Masonry for the Xenex, another condominium project.

The structural masonry design Award of Excellence went to Scorpio Masonry (Northern) Inc. for the Folly in the Devonian Botanic Garden at the University of Alberta.

“Loadbearing concrete masonry and natural cut stone provide the only needed materials in this picturesque structure inspired by the keeps of ancient Scottish castles,” the judges said.

“It towers as a memorial, a gateway, and a vantage point to overlook one of Alberta’s most breathtaking and tranquil landscapes.

The Award of Merit went to K. Hansen Masonry for the Ta-Otha Community School.

IB Jensen Masonry Ltd. was the big winner in the restoration category.

The company took home the Award of Excellence for Coach House.

“The restored coach house sets the tone for an elegant redevelopment of the property,” the judges said.

“Attention to original masonry detailing ensures a successful result.”

The Award of Merit went to Pockar Masonry for Connaught School.

Awards were also handed out for the artistic use of masonry.

The Award of Excellence went to Rushing River Masonry for their work with Rundle Rock Building Stone on Rustic Art.

“This is truly the work of an artisan. The integration of stone and wood elements makes this fireplace a masterpiece,” said the judges.

The Award of Merit went to Voyager Art & Tile for its work on Immense Mode.

The honourable mention went to Gracom Masonry for Mount Royal University Entry Signs.

The Presidential Award went to G&M Stone Masonry for the Royal Canadian Pacific Railway Pavilion.

“The elegant and spare use of stone stood out in this project, which literally showcases masonry in a glass box,” the judges said.

“The pavilion fits in its modern urban setting and is a nod to the legacy of historic stonework in downtown Calgary.”
