Canoe Pass Tidal Energy Corporation selected New Energy Corporation to supply the turbines. They have developed the technology at a smaller scale and have a variety of proven units in the field. Their business model is to develop the technology through a series of different scales, said Chris Knight, president of Canoe Pass Tidal Energy Corporation.

The supplier of the marine current turbines on the proposed Canoe Pass Tidal Commercialization Energy Project is making a significant contribution to the development of this emerging technology.

Canoe Pass Tidal Energy Corporation selected New Energy Corporation to supply the turbines.

“They have developed the technology at a smaller scale and have a variety of proven units in the field. Their business model is to develop the technology through a series of different scales,” aid Chris Knight, president of Canoe Pass Tidal Energy Corporation.

New Energy has current turbines installed in closed containment channels at irrigation and sewage treatment systems in Manitoba, Alberta, B.C., the North West Territories and Alaska.

“We are developing the design engineering through this project, by building out to the 125 and 250kw scale,” said Knight.

“Scaling these devices up to this level has not been done before.”

New Energy produces 5, 10 and 25 kW power generation systems and is working to scale up its core technology to provide 125 and 250 kW models. Another reason Knight selected this technology is the shaft and the turbine housing are the only parts of the equipment in the water.

This means that the gear box and the generator are above the ocean.

“This technology lent itself most appropriately to the site in terms of the physical contours of the location and the depth of the water,” he said.

“The main challenge is the torque and the forces created by a devise of this scale. We have to anchor the bearings at the bottom of the turbine housing.”
