OTTAWA — Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) has shut down the Centre Block construction site in Ottawa due to the convoy of truckers protesting vaccine mandates and other public health measures in the city’s core.
The convoy began as a protest to a vaccine mandate implemented by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government for truckers crossing the United States-Canada border. After a cross-country trip that started in British Columbia, the trucks started filling the streets around Parliament Hill Friday afternoon (Jan. 28). The convoy, which has been referred to as the Freedom Convoy, has received support from protesters and people lining the sides of highways and bridges as the trucks make their way across the country.
“The safety and security of workers on Parliament Hill remains a top priority for Public Services and Procurement Canada,” a PSPC spokesperson wrote in an email to the Daily Commercial News. “Out of an abundance of caution, PSPC and the Parliamentary Protective Service have made the decision to close the Centre Block construction site from Friday, Jan. 28 to Tuesday, Feb. 1 due to the planned protest taking place in Ottawa. PSPC is monitoring the situation in close collaboration with the Senate of Canada, House of Commons, Library of Parliament, and the Parliamentary Protective Service, and will adjust our activities, as needed.”
