A Calgary contractor was murdered New Year’s Day in a triple homicide.
The innocent bystander was caught in a deadly rivalry between local gangs.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Calgary identified three deceased people, who were shot and killed in a gun battle at Bolsa Restaurant, located in a strip mall.
According to the examiner, Keni Su’a, 43, was found dead outside the restaurant.
The circumstances of the shooting are still being investigated.
At about 3:50 p.m. two men entered the restaurant, walked towards the table where a known gang member, an associate and a female were sitting and fired several shots.
The police believe it is likely that Su’a was confronted by a third person after he left the restaurant.
When the two gunmen exited the restaurant, he was gunned down. Police are unsure why Su’a was shot.
The local contractor had no known gang ties or drug-related connections, making him the first victim with no connection to gangs to be caught in Calgary’s escalating gang war.
Su’a decided to go to the restaurant, because he wanted to get a New Year’s soup and his favourite Vietnamese restaurant was closed.
Su’a had moved to Kelowna, B.C. in 1998, from the capital of Samoa, Apia, to work with the global Christian organization Youth With a Mission.
He became a Canadian citizen in 2004 and moved to Calgary, where he worked as a foreman with Champs Curbing Ltd. in High River.
He was described as a hard worker, who was starting his own curbing business. He regularly sent money home to his family in Samoa.
