UA plumbers, pipefitters vote for strike mandate

UA plumbers, pipefitters vote for strike mandate

TORONTO — Ontario UA members in the plumbing, pipefitting and welding trades in the ICI sector have voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike mandate.

The vote was Tuesday (April 12) with ballots cast at union locals across the province. Of 3,045 votes received, 97.37 per cent of members voted in favour of the strike mandate, giving their negotiating team a stronger hand when negotiations resume.

During an April 7 negotiating session, the union negotiators asked for $5 increases for each of the three next years, representing a raise of over 20 per cent, while the contractors responded with proposed raises of 4.25 per cent, 2.25 per cent and 1.50 per cent, adding up to eight per cent.

All three-year ICI contracts in the province expire April 30.

The next scheduled bargaining session between union and employer negotiators is April 19.
