METROLINX - The Ontario Line project is a 15.6-kilometre, 15-stop subway line expansion to Toronto's transit system including a bridge (above) spanning the Don River.

The Ontario Line project is part of the largest subway expansion program in North America. The 15.6-kilometre, 15-stop subway line will run from Exhibition Place, through the heart of downtown, all the way to the Ontario Science Centre. Once complete, it will provide major relief from crowding on busy transit lines across Toronto thanks to connections with dozens of other travel options along the way. What it all adds up to is a bigger, more connected transit system that will make it easier to experience the entire Greater Golden Horseshoe region.

“What we are experiencing here in the GTA is one of the most exciting infrastructure transformations happening around the world. As we now deliver the largest transit program ever in Canada, we have a rare opportunity to create even stronger connections between our communities.  Within ten years, we will have added more than 40 kilometres of new subway lines, almost 50 kilometres of new light rail transit lines, more than 200 kilometres of new GO train tracks and upwards of 100 new stations and stops to help people move throughout the GTA, Hamilton and Niagara Region. These tracks, stations and connections are needed to support the nearly 10 million people who are expected to live here by 2041. The improvements we make today will ensure a healthy region in the future,” says Phil Verster, Metrolinx CEO.

With one early works package already awarded, Metrolinx is currently building the teams that will help deliver three early works procurement packages that, once complete, will lay the foundation for the other major Ontario Line construction.

The Enabling Works Three package is a robust construction project that will be available for bidding in early August. It includes a new iconic bridge that crosses the Don Valley Parkway and Don River, with major excavations and the addition of civil infrastructure that will transition the Ontario Line tunnel to grade. The package also includes construction of a cut and cover tunnel, an emergency service building and noise barrier, a new high-voltage transmission tower and relocation of GO Transit track and signals. This package consists of a two-stage procurement process—a prequalification stage and a shortlist of proponents to select the top-ranked teams.
