CALGARY, ALTA. – The Red Cross Building in downtown Calgary will soon return to service.
Interior demolition and hazardous material remediation at the currently unoccupied building will begin in early 2023 and is expected to take about six months, an Alberta government release said.
“This project is part of Alberta Infrastructure’s goal to effectively use existing spaces, revamping these buildings and getting them in the best shape to serve Albertans for many years to come. We’re glad to fulfil our government’s commitment to revitalize downtown Calgary while making the best use of tax dollars,” Alberta Minister of Infrastructure Nicolas Milliken said in a press release.
The project “fulfils the Government of Alberta mandate outlined in the Calgary Office Revitalization and Expansion (CORE) working group to attract foot traffic and enhance the experience of visitors, residents and local businesses,” the release stated.
The building was originally built in 1978 by the Alberta government for use by the Red Cross and the most recent tenant, Canadian Blood Services, moved out in 2000. The building consists of a basement, six floors and a mechanical rooftop structure.
“Calgary is one of the best cities in the world to live, raise a family, and grow a business. These kinds of initiatives are key to boosting our local economy, as they offer clean, modern spaces that will keep business in downtown Calgary and offer new opportunities for expansion in the years to come,” Calgary Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Deborah Yedlin added.
