TORONTO — Therme Canada has contributed to the Government of Ontario’s development application for the revitalization of Ontario Place, which was submitted to the City of Toronto recently for consideration.
The application includes detailed plans of Therme’s proposed development and marks an important milestone in the province’s plan to redevelop the iconic Toronto landmark as a “world-class year-round destination for all,” states a release.
Therme Group was selected by the Government of Ontario through an international bidding competition held in 2019 and subsequently signed a long-term ground lease for certain portions of Ontario Place.
Now the team has a big vision that proposes creating nearly 12 acres of public space including parkland, a new bridge, a beach, gathering spaces, a Wetland Innovation Zone, a waterpark, wellness facility and cultural programming.
The plan for the West Island was designed over the past 12 months in partnership with landscape architects STUDIO tla, and with input from the public, stakeholders, the City of Toronto, and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, explains a release.
Shoreline restoration is also included in the plan for the West Island to help protect it from flooding, erosion and high-water levels.
Initially there were three private-sector proponents introduced in July 2021, but now there are only two left.
In a previous Daily Commercial News article, Infrastructure Ontario spokesperson Ian McConachie said in early September it was learned Ecorecreo Group had withdrawn from the project. The Montreal firm was going to develop an all-season adventure park with such attractions as aerial obstacle courses, ziplines, climbing walls and kayak rentals.
Other than Therme Canada, Live Nation intends to redevelop the existing amphitheatre into a year-round indoor-outdoor music and performance venue with an expanded capacity.
Ontario Place was a popular regional destination when it opened in 1971. It has been underutilized lately with some sites vacant for over a decade.
