OTTAWA — A renowned Nova Scotia architect and a prolific Montreal developer were among 99 Canadians appointed to the Order of Canada Dec. 29.
Among the new appointments announced by Governor General Mary Simon were two Companions, 32 Officers and 65 Members. Three appointments are promotions within the Order.
New members include Brian Gerald MacKay-Lyons, a founding partner of MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects based in Halifax. In over 30 years of work, the practice has earned over 150 awards, including the 2017 Global Award for Sustainable Architecture.
MacKay-Lyons, of Kingsbury, N.S., recently retired from Dalhousie University after 37 years as a professor and faculty member.
The Order of Canada citation stated the architect was recognized “for his contributions to architecture, notably through his vernacular designs that celebrate Nova Scotia culture.”
Developer Samuel Gewurz of Hampstead, Que. was cited for his “groundbreaking contributions to Montreal’s urban development, and for his transformational philanthropy and community engagement.”
Founded in 1965, his Proment Corporation has been Nuns’ Island’s primary residential developer, building more than 6,000 condos and homes, six waterfront communities and the first LEED gold residential towers in Quebec as well as one of the few LEED ND neighbourhoods in Canada.
Proment is currently developing the Pointe-Nord neighbourhood.
Appointees will be invited to an investiture ceremony at a later date to receive their insignia.
