Niagara Falls tunnel project for Ontario Power Generation hydroelectric plant nearing breakthrough

Ontario Power generation expects to finish part of a tunnel boring project for the Sir Adam Beck Generating Station in Niagara Falls this Friday. Contractor Strabag AG is using a machine called Big Becky.

 

Ontario Power Generation expects to finish part of a tunnel boring project in Niagara Falls this Friday.

The 10.2-km long Niagara Tunnel will deliver water from above Niagara Falls underneath the city to OPG’s Sir Adam Beck Generating Station. The tunnel boring machine, called Big Becky, is expected to break through to daylight this Friday at 11:30 a.m. The design and construction contractor is Austrian firm Strabag AG.

The tunnel boring machine has a drill 14.44 metres, or 47 feet, in diameter. The tunnel is intended to increase output from the Sir Adam Beck complex by 14 per cent.
