The 10.2-km long Niagara Tunnel will deliver water from above Niagara Falls underneath the city to OPG’s Sir Adam Beck Generating Station. The tunnel boring machine, called Big Becky, is expected to break through to daylight this Friday at 11:30 a.m. The design and construction contractor is Austrian firm Strabag AG.
The tunnel boring machine has a drill 14.44 metres, or 47 feet, in diameter. The tunnel is intended to increase output from the Sir Adam Beck complex by 14 per cent.
