KELOWNA, B.C. — The Government of British Columbia is contributing $44.8 million toward a new food centre at the Okanagan College Kelowna campus.
The Centre for Food, Wine and Tourism will cost a total of $48.8 million with the college contributing $4 million to construction, according to a news release.
The centre will be focused around addressing labour shortages in food and tourism, supporting homegrown culinary education, local food and beverages, and hospitality services.
“This investment will ensure people can access world-class training supported by industry in the Okanagan,” said Selina Robinson, minister of post-secondary education and future skills, in the release.
The new centre will bring together all food, wine and tourism programming on the campus and include modern teaching spaces, food labs, beverage research and development facilities.
The centre will allow increased culinary enrolment by 125 students per year and increased hospitality and tourism enrolment by 450.
“The centre will be the first of its kind for collaboration between students and businesses in the food, beverage, hospitality and resort sectors,” reads the release.
Construction is expected to begin this year with completion scheduled for 2026.
