DELTA, B.C. — There’s enough recycled gypsum coming out of Delta, B.C. to help build 250,000 homes.
Through its subsidiary CertainTeed Canada, Saint-Gobain North America has reached a milestone of returning one million tonnes of recycled gypsum back into production, states a news release.
The recycled gypsum is being used at the company’s facility in Delta which began operating in 1975 and is the only gypsum manufacturing facility in the province. The milestone was achieved in collaboration with New West Gypsum Recycling.
“Surpassing one million tonnes of recycled gypsum returned to production is an important milestone, which demonstrates Saint-Gobain and CertainTeed Canada’s commitment to sustainability and minimizing our environmental footprint,” CertainTeed CEO Julie Bonamy said in the release.
Through a patented technology, New West pulverizes gypsum core and removes backing paper leaving recycled gypsum ready for use. The recycled material is shipped to CertainTeed Vancouver and put back in production.
CertainTeed is also upgrading it’s Montreal facility to transition the plant away from fossil fuels to renewable electricity, according to the release.
