CCOHS lines up activities for Safety and Health Week 2023

HAMILTON, ONT. — To celebrate Safety and Health Week, which will be held this year from May 1 to 6, the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) is offering free virtual events.

Safety and Health Week is an ideal time for employers, employees, partners, and the public to focus on the importance of preventing injury and illness in the workplace, at home and in the community, states a CCOHS release.

The week will start with a national launch hosted by Safety and Health Week’s partners and will continue with virtual sessions on psychological health and inclusion in the workplace. The week will conclude with a guided meditation.

On Monday, May 1 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. EDT, there will be a Safety and Health Week 2023 National Launch. CCOHS, the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering and Threads of Life will kick off the week with inspirational stories and the announcement of the Focus on Safety National Youth Video Contest winners.

Your Role in Workplace Psychological Health with Mary Ann Baynton, director of collaboration and strategy at Workplace Strategies for Mental Health, and Emma Ashurst, inquiries and technical services manager at CCOHS, will discuss why having a psychologically healthy workplace is important and how all levels of employees can participate. This will take place Tuesday, May 2 from 1 to 2 p.m.

On Wednesday, May 3 from 1 to 2 p.m., Sharon DeSousa, national executive vice-president at the Public Service Alliance of Canada, and Yvone Defreitas, director of human resources and organizational effectiveness at CCOHS, present Fostering an Inclusive Workplace about how to make space for others and talk through employees’ needs in the workplace.

Wrapping up the week is a 30-minute midday mediation on Thursday, May 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Those who participate in the session can improve focus, lower stress and increase productivity.
