LIAM JOHNSTON/FACEBOOK - Liam Johnston, 27, was killed on June 8 when a trench he was working in the City of Calgary collapsed.

CALGARY, ALTA. – Liam Johnston, a 27-year-old worker for Mr. Mike’s Plumbing, was killed on June 8 when a trench he was working in collapsed in the City of Calgary.

In a statement to the Journal of Commerce, Calgary Police Services said the incident is under investigation and its Victim Assistance Support Team has been made available to anyone who was involved or witnessed the incident.

According to the Calgary Fire Department, the incident happened around 10:45 a.m. in the Charleswood neighbourhood of the city. Johnston had gone down a ladder into a hole dug the previous day when the trench collapsed on top of him.

“Firefighters used tools to remove the sandy soil and parts of the cinder block retaining wall however it became evident that heavy equipment was needed for removal of the surrounding dirt,” the CFD wrote in a release.

“A track hoe and several dump trucks were brought to the scene to start excavating the area.”

Johnston’s body was later recovered. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
