The B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s Deputy Minister’s Consulting Engineers Awards recently honoured some of the best engineering projects in the province.

"We’re here celebrating the deputy minister awards for engineering services," said David Duncan, the assistant deputy minister of highways for the B.C. Ministry of Transportation.

"It’s an award to recognize engineering excellence in the development of transportation projects all across the province."

Finalists and a winner were named in five different categories during a gala that was part of the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – B.C. (ACEC-BC) Transportation Conference.

"The two organizations have had a great relationship for a number of years," said Keith Sashaw, ACEC-BC president.

"The role that consulting engineers play in the design and construction of transportation, highways and other infrastructure projects is really critical."

He added that they can sit down with the ministry on a regular basis and identify issues, come up with solutions and generally support the development of infrastructure projects.

The nominated projects are put forward by the ministry as examples of good engineering.

The Deputy Minister Award winner in the Construction Management and Supervision category went to Glacier Technical Services Ltd. for their work on the Little Sands Bridge Replacement on Highway 3 between Cranbrook and the Alberta border.

The work included replacing a 20 metre span bridge and widening the highway to accommodate a turning lane.

"The existing highway was a two-lane highway and they extended it out to a three-lane highway," said Brent Shypitka, president of Glacier Technical Services Ltd.

He added maintaining the flow of traffic, as well as motorist safety was a challenge.

"It’s very nice to be recognized," he said.

CMS Construction, a division of CMS Focus Corporation, and Tetra Tech Inc. were the finalists in the category.

The Deputy Minister Award winner in the Design and Contract Preparation –Structures is CWMM Consulting Engineers Ltd. for their work on the Highway 2, Tupper Creek to 192nd Road project.

The two finalists were McElhanney Consulting Service Ltd. and Herold Engineering Ltd.

The winner in the Design and Contract Preparations – Roads category is McElhanney Consulting Services Ltd. for work on the Malahat Safety Improvement Project (Shawnigan Lake Road to Summit Weather Station).

The finalists were Associated Engineering (BC) Ltd. and R.F. Binnie & Associates Ltd.

The Deputy Minister Award winner for Specialized Engineering Services is BGC Engineering Inc. for work on Alaska Highway No. 97 South Taylor Hill.

Thurber Engineering Ltd. and Capilano Maritime Design Ltd. were finalists.

The fifth award of the evening was presented to Clean Energy Compression Corp. for the Long-term CNG Fueling Solutions.
