CALGARY, ALTA. – The Government of Alberta is putting $5 million in planning funding into a new multidisciplinary science hub at the University of Calgary.
The new hub will be the primary home for research and collaboration in the faculty of science, the University of Calgary’s second-largest faculty, and provide classroom and lab space for 2,200 students, a release said.
“University of Calgary is a key driver of Alberta’s innovation future through training and research in energy, agriculture, computer science and health. Our work also supports emerging industries including quantum, critical minerals and aerospace. The investment in the Multidisciplinary Science Hub building will allow us to supercharge research and innovation and expand capacity to meet industry needs by training the next generation of STEM leaders,” University of Calgary faculty of science dean Kristin Baetz said in a statement.
“Through this funding, the University of Calgary can begin planning a facility that will ensure the greatest impact for the faculty of science and its students,” the government release added.
The hub will support students in areas such as agriculture innovation, computer science, energy, quantum, biotechnology and aerospace. A dedicated student success centre will focus on workplace skills while startup incubators and industry collaboration spaces will provide internships and hands-on learning.
