CITY OF KYLE/MAYOR TRAVIS — St. David’s Healthcare, Austin’s fourth-largest private employer, has announced the location of their new facility in Kyle, Texas.

As its population and economic growth continue, new hospitals are being planned and are opening across Texas. As is the case throughout most of the state, these new hospitals are privately-owned, for-profit facilities.

Minneapolis-based contractor Adolfson & Peterson recently completed two hospitals in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for Reunion Rehabilitation Hospitals, a privately-owned medical facility network based in Denver, Colo.  These two projects extend a building partnership that includes three hospitals in Phoenix and Peoria, Ariz., and Inverness, Colo.

Each of Reunion’s new Texas facilities specializes in rehabilitative care. Both hospitals, one in Plano and the other in Arlington, officially opened in July this year and represent a combined investment of $37 million. Development was supported by America Development & Investments LLC (ADI), a leading Dallas-based health care real estate developer.

Reunion Rehab Arlington broke ground back in January 2021 and features expansive dayrooms for patients recovering from debilitating illnesses and injuries such as stroke and brain injury, as well as other complex neurological and orthopaedic conditions. The facility features food services and dining areas, along with fitness and physical therapy spaces in its three-story, 50,800-square-foot complex. Facilities include an outdoor courtyard for relaxation and therapeutic activities, according to an Adolfson & Peterson media release.

At more than 55,000 square feet, Reunion Rehab Plano occupies a 2.5 acre site and features 48 patient rooms, large, high-tech therapy gyms and an outdoor courtyard for relaxation and therapeutic activities.

Immediately northeast of Houston in Cypress, the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic has announced a 120,000-square-foot expansion of their medical services that will include an ambulatory surgery center, comprehensive adult and paediatric care and additional diagnostic imaging and testing services. Renamed the Northwest Campus, it will serve as the regional specialty and ancillary campus for patients living in the northwest region of Greater Houston, the company says.

Austin also has two new hospitals in the planning stage made possible through a partnership between the University of Texas at Austin and MD Anderson Cancer Center. The MD Anderson facility in Houston is ranked by Medical Air Services as one of the best cancer treatment facilities in the world.

As reported by Houston Public Media, the new MD Anderson Cancer Center will have 156 beds and more than 230 outpatient exam rooms, procedure rooms, diagnostic imaging capabilities and radiation and chemotherapy services. A second phase will offer subspecialty clinics such as breast cancer and colorectal cancer clinics and specialized services such as bone marrow transplantation. Dr. Peter Pisters, president of MD Anderson, said the facility should also create thousands of jobs.

Today expands our mission to make health care more accessible,” Gov. Greg Abbott said at the announcement ceremony. “One of the best ways we can go about doing that is through our universities and university-based health care facilities. Rather than having (Central) Texans travel to Houston, we will now be bringing the world’s best cancer care to them, right here in Central Texas.”

Plans for the second university hospital, yet unnamed, have not been finalized. However, it is expected to be a 250-bed facility offering complex specialty care for those in the Austin region with severe cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and neural conditions. Total investment for the two facilities is estimated to be $2.5 billion.

There are more hospitals and health facilities coming to Austin.

St. David’s HealthCare, a partnership between hospital management company HCA Healthcare and local non-profits St. David’s Foundation and Georgetown Health Foundation, have confirmed the location of a new health facility in Kyle, 20 miles south of Austin, as part of a $1 billion expansion.

As one of the largest health systems in the state, St. David’s HealthCare owns and operates eight hospitals and 132 health facilities throughout Texas. With a workforce of over 11,000, it’s Austin’s fourth largest employer.

In addition to the Kyle hospital, St. David’s also plans to build a full-service, acute-care hospital in Leander in north Austin, and an 80-bed behavioural hospital near St. David’s North Austin Medical Center. It will also expand and renovate the St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas at the North Austin Medical Center.

Texas has more hospitals overall than any other state in the country. As in other parts of the U.S., these function under a complex system of economic, legal and regulatory regimes. Hospitals in Texas operating on a for-profit basis outnumber state and local government facilities by a factor of 2.5 to one, according to statista.com. Many of these provide specialized patient care not always available through public facilities.
