Canal Road repairs on South Pender Island set for February 2024

PENDER ISLAND, B.C. — A repair project is set to begin in February 2024 on a section of Canal Road on South Pender Island, which was damaged by heavy rain and flooding in November 2021.

The work, which has been put out to tender on BC Bid, is aimed at improving the safety and reliability of the road for both residents and visitors.

The damaged road section, located approximately 2.5 kilometres east of the Pender Canal Bridge will undergo extensive repairs.

These will include clearing, rock blasting, offloading the existing slide and roadway, realigning the road onto solid bedrock, upsizing the existing culvert, installing a reinforced retaining wall and constructing a temporary barge landing facility at Boundary Passage Drive for transporting equipment and materials.

According to a recent press release, these permanent repairs will enhance the road’s resilience against future extreme weather events.

In response to the initial flood damage, safety measures were implemented, including single-lane alternating traffic with timed signals, slope deformation monitors, and load restrictions during significant rain events.

These measures will continue throughout the repair project, with crews monitoring road deformation and performing necessary maintenance.

The project’s proximity to the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve necessitated additional federal environmental permitting. Post-construction, revegetation and mitigation measures will be implemented to minimize environmental impact, the release reads.

During the repair work, single-lane alternating traffic will be maintained, and drivers should anticipate delays, including possible intermittent road closures for up to four hours. Efforts will be made to minimize traffic disruptions, especially during peak travel times, and advance notice of any significant traffic changes will be provided via DriveBC.

Drivers are advised to drive cautiously, adhering to construction-zone speed limits and following traffic-control signs and personnel.
