University of Miami names construction management track after Florida construction leader

MIAMA, FLA.—The University of Miami is naming a newly created construction management track in honour of Thomas P. Murphy Jr.

The university’s school of architecture is naming the track the Murphy Construction Management Program in honour of the Florida construction industry leader.

Murphy is also supporting scholarships and project-based learning for construction management students, part of the University of Miami’s Ever Brighter: The Campaign for Our Next Century, a Coastal Construction release said.

Murphy Jr. is the founder, chairman and CEO of the company.

The campaign is the most ambitious in the university’s history and is set to conclude in 2025 when the institution will celebrate its centennial.

“Education has the power to transform lives, and we believe that every talented individual deserves equal access to educational opportunities. With this endowment, we are investing in the potential of future construction management students, enabling them to pursue their dreams and make a lasting impact on the industry,” University of Miami school of architecture dean Rodolphe el-Khoury said in a statement.

“It is an honor to continue supporting the University of Miami School of Architecture and now the construction management program,” Murphy added. “Supporting these bright young minds, who will become the next generation of builders, is very important.”

Murphy started his construction career at the University of Miami in 1968 when, as a 19-year-old student, he became the youngest licensed contractor in Florida history and started his construction company at age 20.

Previously Murphy made a gift to the university to name a building at the school of architecture the Thomas P. Murphy Design Studio Building after his father. The building was designed by Arquitectonica and built by Coastal Construction and received multiple awards, including the 2018 Building of the Year from World-Architects.
