BURNABY, B.C. – Simon Fraser University has announced it will build a new 445-bed student housing project at its Burnaby, B.C. campus.

The eight-storey residence will be a mix of self-contained studio and quad units, as well as two- and four-bedroom townhouses and will include a 160-space child care centre, a release said.

The project will be constructed using mass timber and is targeting optimal BC Energy Step Code and Zero Carbon Code compliance, the release said.

Total cost will be $187.6 million with B.C. contributing $132.2 million and SFU contributing the remaining $55.4 million.

The project is the third phase of SFU’s student housing expansion, with the first phase including 482 single-room dormitory-style student beds which opened in 2021 and the second phase in 2023 including 383 student beds.

Construction is expected to be complete in fall 2027.
