Mine worker fatally injured at New Gold site

Mine worker fatally injured at New Gold site

TORONTOFamily and friends are mourning the death of Jeffrey Woolsey, who was fatally injured July 24 while operating equipment at the New Gold gold mine in Rainy River, Ont.

A release from New Gold stated an employee died on the job at the open pit mine. A GoFundMe page subsequently identified the deceased worker as Woolsey.

“Those that knew Jeff can attest to the fact that he was a great man that took passion in his work on the family farm and at the Rainy River gold mine,” stated the fundraising description. “He enjoyed hunting and trapping on the family property. But above all Jeff loved and was always proudest about his family.”

The GoFundMe fundraising goal was $5,000 but as of July 30 $39,495 had been raised. The beneficiaries were said to be Woolsey’s family, to “alleviate some of the financial burden on the family as they make preparations for a celebration of life.”

Operations at the mine resumed July 27, “as no other equipment or site infrastructure was impacted in the incident,” stated New Gold.  “New Gold is supporting the authorities with their investigation.”

Ontario’s Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development was asked for more information on the incident but did not immediately respond.
