VANDERHOOF, B.C. – The province of British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) has issued an order for a B.C. mining company to shut down an unauthorized work camp.
The order was issued to BW Gold Ltd. on July 31 for its Blackwater Gold project located 110 kilometres south of Vanderhoof, B.C.
An on-site inspection on May 14, 2024, found a newly constructed worker accommodation camp at the former Chu Mineral site in operation without authorization. Blackwater Gold’s environmental assessment certificate allows the project to have two camps – one for construction and one for operations – with both to be developed within the mine site only, an EAO statement said.
The Chu Mineral camp is supporting construction of a transmission line for the project. The provincial ministry of energy, mines & low carbon innovation permitted the camp but advised that other authorizations may be required, and the project must comply with its existing certificate.
The EAO ordered the certificate holder, BW Gold, to cease operation of the construction camp at the Chu Mineral site by 2 p.m. on Aug. 21, 2024, and remove all the camp infrastructure by 6 p.m. on Aug. 31, 2024.
A two-week extension was granted while members of BC Wildfire and wildfire contractors also used the camp.
