LEAMINGTON, ONT. – Caldwell First Nation of southwestern Ontario will upgrade the Hillman Marshland’s southern dyke with the assistance of $15 million in funding from the federal government.
The community is reinforcing the dyke to prevent potential flooding of over 3,440 hectares, which includes numerous buildings, businesses and infrastructure on both First Nations and municipal land in Leamington.
The federal government is funding the project through the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund.
“The upgrades to Hillman Marshland’s dyke are vital for protecting our community and farmland, as climate change has intensified flooding risks, making these enhancements crucial for safeguarding thousands of acres and ensuring the future resilience of our region,” stated Windsor-Tecumseh MP
Irek Kusmierczyk in a release.
