CLARINGTON, ONT. — Design plans are underway for the new South Bowmanville Recreation Centre in Clarington, Ont. and shovels are expected in the ground by spring.
The approved phase one design renderings show plans for a modern facility that includes a gymnasium; multi-purpose rooms for recreation programming; a quiet room; and a FIFA-sized multi-sport dome with indoor walking track that can accommodate a variety of field sports.
The design also features an outdoor skating trail that can be used in the warmer months as an outdoor community event space or a public market area and a playground on the site that is also already home to Clarington Fields, indicates a release.
Clarington council also recently approved the addition of an indoor aquatics facility to the site.
As part of phase two, the aquatic addition will include a 25-metre main pool, a teaching pool, therapy pool and a large viewing area among other features.
The addition is a result of the findings from Clarington’s draft Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan, which recommends an indoor aquatic centre for this location, citing a clear need for additional aquatics programming in Bowmanville, states the release.
The recreation centre is expected to open in summer 2026. The aquatics centre is anticipated to open at a later date.
