Excavation collapse leaves one worker dead, two injured

TORONTO — One male worker has died, and two others sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries after reports a pit collapsed while crews were fixing a sewer pipe in the area of Bayview and Ruddington avenues in Toronto Nov. 6.

Toronto police, medics and fire were called to the scene at 3200 Bayview Avenue at approximately 5:25 p.m.

During a media briefing Toronto Fire Platoon Chief Chris Rowland stated the workers were inspecting pipes and had inserted a camera inside their excavation, which had not been shored.

A portion of the soil then collapsed on top of one of the workers and trapped two others.

Rescuers dug for over an hour to free two of the workers, who were then taken to hospital.

Two Ministry of Labour (MOL) inspectors were dispatched to the scene and an investigation is currently underway.

MeadowBrook Construction is the constructor and employer.

“Our thoughts are with the families and co-workers affected during this difficult time. More information will be provided as it becomes available,” the MOL writes in an email to the Daily Commercial News.
