Spencer Steel Ltd. of Ilderton was fined $55,000 for a violation of the provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act in connection with a construction site accident last year in which steel beams collapsed.
The Ontario Ministry of Labour announced this week that Spencer Steel Ltd. of Ilderton was fined $55,000 for a violation of the provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act in connection with a construction site accident last year.
On May 26, 2010, workers were erecting a steel structure on Wonderland Road in London. Two workers were standing on steel beams when the beams collapsed. They fell about five meters and were injured.
The Ministry of Labour investigated the accident and found that the steel beams were not adequately braced to prevent their collapse, in accordance with section 31 of Ontario Regulation 213/91, which is part of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Spencer Steel pleaded guilty in a London court. Justice of the Peace Robert Seneshen fined the firm $55,000 plus a 25-per-cent victim surcharge.
