TORONTO — Construction on the two centre lanes of the Gardiner Expressway between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue is progressing with crews working around the clock placing girders for the elevated roadway.
Work has also continued on concrete placement for the bent caps (the tops of the concrete support columns), the City of Toronto reports.
In November, a milestone had been reached on the Gardiner Expressway rehabilitation project, with the Ontario government celebrating the start of the second phase of construction four months ahead of schedule.
The full project is expected to be finished one year ahead of schedule after the province invested $73 million on the condition work be carried out 24/7.
The scope of the rehabilitation work includes revitalizing 700 metres of elevated roadway from Dufferin Street to Strachan Avenue, reinforcing support structures, installing new streetlights and upgrading the traffic management system.
Once construction is complete, it is anticipated the 140,000 drivers who rely on the Gardiner every day will save up to 22 minutes per trip, the province states.
