Enbridge Gas Distribution has been converting its extensive network of cast iron pipes to plastic in downtown Toronto. Along this section of Berkeley Street, at King Street East, the line dated back to 1932.

Crews dug out the old pipe and laid down the replacement as they proceeded from street to street. To avoid disruption at busy intersections, crews used a directional drilling machine to tunnel the line underground, pulling it one three-metre rod at a time.

Link Line Contractors Ltd. of Milton managed the project for Enbridge, with subcontractors including Phil’s Haulage and Excavating Ltd. of Mount Albert, Pro-Cut Concrete Cutting Ltd. of Concord, and Ontario Redimix Ltd. of Toronto. Enbridge has retained Lakeside Gas Services to connect the lines to individual properties next spring.
