Jack Ball, a former president of Ball Brothers Ltd. of Kitchener, Ontario has been inducted into the Grand Valley Construction Association’s (GVCA) hall of fame.

“It’s a real honour,” said the 83-year-old Ball, who got his start in construction in the mid 1940s, working first in the field and then the office at the family business started by his father and his uncle.

Ball Brothers General Contractors was founded by Harold and Frank Ball in 1923. It became Ball Brothers Ltd. in 1930.

Jack Ball became president in 1967, running the company in conjunction with his brothers Jim and Thom for more than three decades.

The third generation took over in 1997 as Ball Construction Inc.

“I guess it was inevitable that I would join the family business,” he said looking back.

In 1965, he founded Advance Construction Equipment Ltd. to complement the family’s growing construction business.

During his career, Ball was active in a number of professional organizations, including the Ontario General Contractors Association, the Canadian Construction Association and the former Kitchener Waterloo Construction Association.

“I was always interested in meeting and working with the competition,” he said.

The GVCA said Ball is also a committed philanthropist, “supporting our community with his time, effort and financial resources.”

The hall of fame award recognizes an individual who has made a substantial contribution to the betterment of the construction industry and the local community. It was presented at the association’s annual general meeting Feb. 21.

Ball was accompanied by a number of family members, including son Jason, now the company’s president.
