Iron Ore Company proposes road construction in Labrador

The Newfoundland and Labrador department of Environment and Conservation recently announced that the Iron Ore Company of Canada has submitted a proposal to construct 34 kilometres of roads in 2012 and 2013.

LABRADOR CITY, N.L.

The Newfoundland and Labrador department of Environment and Conservation recently announced that the Iron Ore Company of Canada has submitted a proposal to construct 34 kilometres of roads in 2012 and 2013.

Iron Ore Co. operates a mine, concentrator and pelletizing plant in Labrador City, near the Quebec border. It also has port facilities in Sept-Iles, Quebec and a 418-kilometre railroad between Labrador City and Sept-Iles. The province stated the road network, which the firm wants to facilitate diamond drilling, was proposed in western Labrador.

“The work will consist of expanding existing trails into roads, new road construction, development of four borrow pits and the installation of culverts and bridges across 14-15 streams,” the province stated in an April 24 bulletin on its website. “The proponent has indicated that an Environmental Protection Plan will be submitted that considers all aspects of road construction activities as well as all activities associated with the subsequent drilling and exploration program.”
