The 26th annual Provincial Carpentry, Acoustic & Drywall and Floor Covering Apprenticeship Contest features the top apprentices from Carpenters’ Union locals from across Ontario.

KINGSTON, ONT.

The 26th annual Provincial Carpentry, Acoustic & Drywall and Floor Covering Apprenticeship Contest features the top apprentices from Carpenters’ Union locals from across Ontario.

“These apprentices are our future leaders, our future foremen and superintendants on construction sites,” said Don Fraser business manager of competition host, Local 249 in Kingston, Ont.

The apprentices have up to 14 hours to complete a major project. Drywall apprentices will complete a framed room with windows and doors. Carpentry apprentices will have to demonstrate competency in formwork, a stair stringer and a small project.

Also required to complete a series of written tests related to their field, the contestants include fourth term carpentry apprentices, fourth to fifth year drywall and four to fifth year floor covering apprentices.

“It showcases the effort that the union training centres put into training their members,” said Fraser.

The top three winners in each category will be awarded tools and cash prizes at the finale — an evening banquet attended by contestants, union staff, provincial government officials and industry partners. Judging will be done by experts in each building trade.

First place winners in each category will go on to represent their trade for Ontario at the National Apprenticeship Contest in Edmonton in August.

The contest is free to the public and held at a different carpenters’ locals in the province each year. The competition takes place June 7-9.
