The City of Fredericton has awarded a $1.2 million contract to Jones Masonry Ltd. to repair the exterior of the historic City Hall of the New Brunswick capital.

The scope of work includes cutting out and re-pointing deteriorated joints using lime mortar, rebuilding and repairing stonework, installing helical masonry ties and repairing cracks in the structure. Fredericton City Hall was built in 1876. The three-storey structure is the oldest City Hall in Atlantic Canada and was designated a national historic site in 1984.

Jones was the lower of two qualified bidders at $1,193,063.

The City is also retaining the services of an archeologist to monitor the site for artifacts, and has hired Paul Jeffs of P.J. Materials Construction to oversee the restoration work. P.J. Materials was one of the parties that originally assessed the condition of the building.

The city expects the restoration to be complete by March 31, 2012. City Council applied to the federal government for a grant under a cost-sharing program with Parks Canada National Historic Sites.
