Aecon has reached the half-way point in its compact construction schedule for the $49.1 million median widening project on Highway 407.
“The tight schedule has been challenging but we learned quite a bit doing a similar job at the (Highways) 427-404 project,” says John Chow, Aecon construction vice-president.
The current project will add two inside lanes, along a 27 kilometre stretch of Hwy. 407, from Hwy. 427 in the east to Hwy. 401 in the west, expanding the central section of the highway and improving traffic flow during peak hours.
“Right now we are at the 410 which is the mid-point,” says Chow. “At our peak we have had 40 workers, including some subcontractors at one point, working away. Skilled leaders, skilled trades people and experience have been key.”
Aecon, one of the original partners in the development, design, construction and operation of the 407 ETR, is responsible for the project’s median reconstruction, grading, drainage, hot mix paving and illumination work. This current project follows a similar project which Aecon completed in 2006 to widen the 407 ETR between Highway 427 and Highway 404.
There has been 100,00 cubic metres of earth excavated, 300,000 tonnes of granular material, 70,000 tonnes of asphalt paving, 350,000 square metres of concrete paving and nine kilometers of drainage pipes installed.
“The paving and granular quantities have been a lot,” says Chow. Aecon’s commitment to minimizing traffic disruption, as much as possible during construction, has worked out well. Aecon managed to complete the traffic switching over one weekend, notes Chow.
The projected completion date for the project is mid-September.
