New technology is being used to speed up replacement of the Little Savanne River Bridge on Highway 17 just east of Upsala, Ont.
Transportation Minister Harinder Takhar said Tuesday it is the first bridge in Ontario to be built using the new technology.
“By using prefabricated bridge parts, the job will be done faster – six months instead of eight and that will mean less frustration for drivers.”
The technology involves using 20 prefabricated panels and six steel beams. The ready-made parts are brought in, assembled and installed on-site.
The prefabricated technology cuts traffic congestion, costs and harmful effects to the environment.
The bridge is expected to be completed by October.
The $4.7-million contract for the project was awarded to MLA Northern Construction Limited of Thunder Bay.
Construction is under way with one of two lanes on the bridge open to traffic. Drivers will share a single lane and wait their turn at temporary traffic signals.
Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP Bill Mauro said speeding up construction work on the bridge is important.
“Highway bridges are important to drivers in northwestern Ontario.
“Every driver who uses the Little Savanne River Bridge will have a safer and easier trip because of this project.”
