Aecon to build $19M 600 metre breakwall

Aecon Construction and Materials Ltd. has begun construction of a 600-metre-long breakwall that will enclose a multi-sport watercourse along Toronto’s western beaches.

Aecon Construction and Materials Ltd. has begun construction of a 600-metre-long breakwall that will enclose a multi-sport watercourse along Toronto’s western beaches.

The break wall will be built about 135 metres from shore. Depending on the water line, the structure will rise 2.5 metres to three metres out of the water. It will have two arms.

A total of 237,000 tonnes of stone will be used to build the breakwall with the stones ranging in weight from five kilograms to six tonnes. Eighty-five per cent of the material will be recycled stone and will include the concrete from the existing break wall.

Aecon was awarded the $19 million contract by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, which is carrying out the project on behalf of the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corp.The construction company has been on site for about three weeks.

Located west of Ontario Place, the watercourse will be used as a training site for a number of sports as well as competitive events and festivals. Improvements worth another $8 million will also will be made to Marilyn Bell Park, the Martin Goodman Trail and an aquatic habitat.
