Twenty-four drivers competed in the third year of the resurrected Ready Mixed Concrete Association of Ontario (RMCAO) Concrete Truck Rodeo recently.

The course contained nine obstacles as well as a pre-trip inspection. Obstacles included driving both forward and reverse in a serpentine pattern, an alley backup and a target stop. Each of the obstacles were worth a maximum of 50 points each and demerits were given for failure.

"Concrete is a perishable product, our industry drivers are equipped with the task of getting their deliver to its destination within a certain timeframe; in under 120min. With today’s traffic and congestion issues on our highways and roads and many times confined job site spaces, they encounter unique obstacles on a daily basis, that may put strain on their delivery timelines," said RMCAO marketing and communications director Tom Bellis.

"Drivers are the face of our industry on construction projects and job sites. The RMCAO truck rodeo is one of the ways that recognizes just how important the drivers are to their individual companies and to the industry as a whole. The truck rodeo showcases their expertise and driving abilities and mimics some of the obstacles that they maneuver through on a daily basis."

Bryan Houston of Miller Concrete won first place and $1,500 in the rodeo with a total score of 425 points. Cash prizes were awarded to the top five drivers. Mike Reitzel of Hogg Fuel & Supply finished second with 390 points, John Lefebvre of Miller Concrete was third with 385 points., David Benevides of Innocon Inc. was third with 380 points and Roy Needham of Trivant Haulage Ltd. was fifth with 375 points.
