HALIFAX, N.S. —Halifax Water recently completed repairs on the Lake Major dam just outside Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, after a mandatory evacuation of residents in about 135 homes was declared downstream near Little Salmon River.
Construction crews began work placing large rocks at the base of Lake Major dam near the fish ladder on Jan. 17. This work also included filling the fish ladder with more rocks to reinforce the structure.
Halifax Water crews discovered an issue with the fish ladder adjoining the Lake Major dam during a recent routine inspection. The dam is structurally sound.
However, repairs to the fish ladder needed to be undertaken right away.
As a precautionary measure, several hundred residents in the Salmon River and surrounding areas were evacuated from their homes while this work is going on. Comfort centres were opened in East Preston and Westphal.
Four of the six bridges in the area are closed while this work is underway and Route 61 through North Preston was on a detoured route.
Transportation and Public Works has barricades in place at these sites and a barricade is also set up at the intersection of North Preston Road and Johnson Road in North Preston to prevent motorists from entering the construction zone.
