COLEMAN, P.E.I. —Twenty-nine Prince Edward Island employers have been approved funding to provide training for new or current employees in the fields of welding, manufacturing and occupational health and safety.
This means almost 200 workers will get training, thanks in part to Canada’s Job Grant, a release from the province and federal government states.
One of the recipients is Trout River Industries, which is a privately held Canadian company that specializes in live-bottom trailers that allow for quick unloading of cargoes such as potatoes, grain or gravel. The company received more than $4,400 through the Canada Job Grant to provide welding training to 10 employees who had limited welding experience. The training ranged from welding safety to techniques for producing quality welds, explains a release. The company is investing more than $2,200 in the training, for a total of $6,700.
Under the Canada Job Grant in P.E.I, the federal government provides two-thirds of the total eligible training costs, up to $10,000, for expenses such as tuition, textbooks and student fees. Employers are then required to contribute the remaining one-third of the costs. Small businesses have additional flexibility to make an in-kind contribution towards their share of the cost through wages paid to the training participant, the release reads.
According to the provincial occupational forecasting system (2013–15), P.E.I. will see an estimated 3,500 job openings as a result of replacement needs and an increase of about 1,200 in new jobs.
