Oshawa fire hall opens with historic touches

OSHAWA, Ont. —The City of Oshawa has opened the doors of its newest fire station, Fire Hall No. 6 located on Simcoe Street North.

The one-storey, 10,675-square-foot building includes two bays and facilities for full-time firefighters, fire department administration and fire prevention, explains a release. The design of the fire hall and its building materials are meant to complement the legacy of Windfields Farm, which was the birthplace of famed Canadian racehorse Northern Dancer.

Located on 1.99 acres, the design is reminiscent of an agricultural building attached to an equestrian barn, the release reads. The main lobby will serve as a heritage gallery, displaying photographs and artifacts in celebration of the history of both Windfields Farm and Oshawa Fire Services.

The total cost for Fire Hall No. 6 was $4 million, which includes the design, building and furnishings, the release outlines.

Designed in accordance with the city’s accessibility guidelines, the new station also features green initiatives such as drought-resistant landscaping, high-performance thermal windows, high-efficiency mechanical equipment and L.E.D. lighting.

"Fire Hall No. 6 will play an important part in our city’s fire safety and will enhance response to those living and working in the north end of our community," said councillor Bob Chapman, chair of the community services committee, in a statement. "In addition to providing appropriate fire response the hall is also a reflection of the Windfields Farm and its contribution to Oshawa."

The new hall will serve the north end of Oshawa, including subdivisions in the Windfields Farm heritage area of Simcoe and Britannia, the Hamlet of Columbus and near the Highway 407 extension.
