Halifax, Quebec City sites for IKEA outlets

BURLINGTON, ONT.—IKEA Canada has announced details of a second new store as part of its 10-year-expansion plan to build 12 new outlets across Canada, doubling its current roster.

The second full-sized outlet will be built in Quebec City, the Burlington, Ont.-based retailer said. Construction of the first, announced in January for Halifax, is now underway.

Scheduled to open in summer 2018, the IKEA Quebec City store will be located at the intersection of rue Mendel and avenue Blaise-Pascal in the Sainte-Foy borough, just south of the intersection of Highway 40 and Highway 540. The store will take roughly 14 to 16 months to build once ground has been broken in spring 2017 and will be approximately 340,000 square feet in size, the media statement released in September indicated.

The IKEA Quebec City store will be LEED certified when it opens.

The Halifax store will be located at Dartmouth Crossings and will be approximately 328,000 square feet in size. Key features of the building will include a rooftop solar photovoltaic installation to provide electricity to the store and a geothermal energy generation system to support heating and cooling needs as well as 100 per cent LED lighting throughout the store.

A Halifax media outlet puts the value of the build at $100 million and reports that 450 construction jobs will be created during the project. Among the contractors and subcontractors listed are Atlantica Mechanical Contractors, Stantec, Atlantic Road Construction and Paving, Nova Construction Co. and Brewster Well Drilling.
