Montreal tech school receives $67.1 million

MONTREAL — Representatives from three levels of government were on hand in Montreal April 25, as $67.1 million in infrastructure spending was announced to expand the city’s Ecole de technologie superieure (ETS).

Three separate projects will be financed through the Canadian Strategic Investment Fund and the Quebec Infrastructure Plan: the repurposing of the DOW Planetarium, the expansion and reconfiguration of the library and construction of a new pavilion, a media statement noted.

The upgrading of the library is necessary primarily due to a lack of space, with the student population increasing from 3,500 students in 1997 to more than 10,600 in 2017. The library spaces also need to be reconfigured to accommodate new information technologies and new learning spaces.

The DOW Planetarium, which was ceded to ETS by the City of Montreal, will be used for the expansion of Centech, a business incubator for technological entrepreneurs.

The new pavilion will be financed with $26.9 million from the Government of Canada and $16.1 million from the Government of Quebec, along with $10.8 million from ETS. The new pavilion will house a high-performance computing centre, approximately 30 classrooms, workshops associated with ETS student clubs and a learning and relaxation area. In addition, a park will be built to tie the new pavilion in with the Maison des etudiants (Student House), which is located nearby.

The ETS is one of 10 constituents of the Universite du Quebec network, training engineers and researchers.
