Who we are
The voice of the unionized construction sector since 1967, the BC Building Trades comprises 28 affiliated trade unions chartered by 13 international unions. Our 40,000 members include pile drivers, cement masons, electricians, operating engineers, bricklayers, ironworkers, millwrights, insulators, carpenters and other skilled trades workers who support their families and invest in their communities by building this province.
What we do
We build B.C. and we train B.C. workers. We invest $18 million in training annually, and we have more than $44 million in capital assets for training. Our apprenticeship completion rate is more than 85 per cent.
We also advocate on behalf of the unionized construction sector, and so we are proud to be a leading partner in the Community Benefits Coalition of BC, which is a coalition of labour and local companies who want to build B.C. better. We advocate for Community Benefits Agreements on public infrastructure projects that ensure investment in local communities through union wages, benefits and training opportunities, and priority hire for local residents, apprentices, Indigenous workers and women in trades. CBAs leave a legacy of skills training, community investment and employability.
