After six months of construction work, the Union Pearson (UP) Express station at Toronto Pearson International Airport’s Terminal 1 is 75 per cent complete.
The Automated People Mover (APM) will be turned back over to the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), reports Metrolinx.
This marks a major construction milestone for the UP Express indicating that Metrolinx has made steady progress on the new station at Terminal 1.
The UP Express spur line and Terminal 1 passenger station is being constructed by AirLINX Transit Partners Inc., a consortium between Aecon Construction and Materials Limited and Dufferin Construction Company and delivered using the province’s alternative financing and procurement (AFP) delivery model. The contract is for a fixed price and a fixed completion date and is overseen by Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario.
The UP Express station will be located adjacent to the APM station at Terminal 1, to better facilitate passenger transit throughout Pearson Airport. As a result, the APM was required to close for approximately six months to accommodate construction and work had to be completed within a strict timeframe to minimize impact to airport passengers and GTAA employees. During construction, Metrolinx provided transportation solutions for GTAA employees.
The UP Express is on schedule for service to begin in 2015, in time for the Pan/Parapan American Games. The project is considered an example of how Metrolinx is transforming provincial transportation through its “The Big Move” plan.
