Plans under way for second span

Ambassador Bridge officials say they are moving forward on plans announced last year to build a second bridge across the Detroit River that would connect the city with Windsor, Ont.

DETROIT, Mich.

Ambassador Bridge officials say they are moving forward on plans announced last year to build a second bridge across the Detroit River that would connect the city with Windsor, Ont.

Detroit International Bridge Co. says it has begun environmental studies for a four-lane bridge.

But officials have yet to file needed requests for permits for the $300-million (U.S.) span, a Detroit newspaper reported Tuesday.

The bridge, to ease congestion at the two nations’ busiest border crossing, would be built next to or connected to the Ambassador Bridge.

Owned by Grosse Pointe trucking mogul Matty Moroun, the bridge is under no obligation to build another span or make long-range plans public.

Bridge officials expect project studies to take 18 months.

The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and the Ambassador Bridge handle more traffic than any other spot on the long United States-Canada border.

Long delays have become common, particularly since Sept. 11, 2001, but have eased somewhat.
