Marine Contractors Inc. secures $7.8-million N.L. road contract

DCN News Service

Marine Contractors Inc. has been awarded a $7.8 million contract to complete a series of road projects in the 2014 road construction season in western Newfoundland, which were previously contracted to Humber Valley Paving.

ST JOHN’S, N.L

Marine Contractors Inc. has been awarded a $7.8 million contract to complete a series of road projects in the 2014 road construction season in western Newfoundland, which were previously contracted to Humber Valley Paving.

“This is a seamless transition from one contractor to another. Marine Contractors has assumed full responsibility for the $7.8 million in road work with the same contract prices, terms and conditions, warranty and bonding,” said Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works.

“There are no additional costs to the Provincial Government associated with assigning the contract from one contractor to another.”

Humber Valley Paving completed about $50,000 worth of work under the contract in fall 2013, that needed to be addressed prior to the onset of winter.

By the end of 2014, work completed by Marine Contractors will include the rehabilitation of about 11.9 kilometres of the Trans Canada Highway between South Brook Bridge and the interchange at Route 490, realignment of the Trans Canada Highway at St. George’s Intersection, Route 461, and paving of various locations on the Port au Port Peninsula.

The provincial government hired KPMG to help in the assessment and analysis of whether or not to assign the contract from one contractor to another.
