A St. Catharines construction company, T.R. Hinan Contractors Inc., has been fined $125,000 in the death of a man who drowned in December 2005 while travelling by boat in the Parry Sound area.

St. CATHARINES, Ont.

A St. Catharines construction company has been fined $125,000 in the death of a man who drowned on the job in December 2005.

A supervisor at T.R. Hinan Contractors Inc. was also fined $12,000 for violations of health and safety laws.

Four workers and a supervisor working on a Parry Sound area cottage were in an overloaded boat.

The supervisor, running the five-metre boat at full throttle between an island and a marina, spotted ice and shifted the vessel into neutral.

The rapid deceleration caused the boat to capsize. Those on board were not wearing life jackets. Three crew members swam 45 metres to shore, but one did not make it.
