Professional engineer Kimberly Mowat, a project manager at Toronto’s R.V. Anderson Associates (RVA) Ltd., is the recipient of the 2010 Allen D. Williams Scholarship Award from the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies-Canada.
The award is presented to a young professional employed by an ACEC member firm who has demonstrated a commitment to industry initiatives, the ability to work as a team player in furthering industry goals and is involved in volunteer activities that contribute to the industry.
This year’s scholarship will fund registration, airfare and accommodations at the International Federation of Consulting Engineers conference this September in New Delhi India.
“I was very honoured to be recognized for the work that I have done and to be chosen as the award winner,” Mowat said. “Participation at this conference offers a wide range of opportunities that will further my professional and personal development.”
The focus of this year’s conference is managing innovation in the way in which consulting services are supplied worldwide.
The ACEC award is intended to serve as an incentive for young professionals 35 and younger to get involved with their respective consulting engineering industry associations at either the local chapter, provincial or national level.
Mowat, who was nominated by Consulting Engineers of Ontario, became an associate and shareholder of RVA in 2007. She is a project manager and process designer in the firm’s water and wastewater group.
She has five years of experience in detailed design and management of environmental engineering projects related to drinking water treatment, supply and storage facilities.
Mowat, who holds a master of applied science degree in civil environmental engineering, is involved in a variety of volunteer activities. She is the current chair of the Ontario Water Works Association’s communications and public affairs committee.
She recently worked with Engineers Without Borders to deliver a water education workshop as part of National Engineering Week. Mowat also is a member of RVA’s quality assurance committee.
The scholarship was created in memory of Allen Williams, founder of A.D. Williams Engineering Inc. of Edmonton who died in a plane crash in October, 2007 near Golden, B.C.
Williams was a former ACEC chair and a past president of Consulting Engineers of Alberta.
