During his career, Jack McKiernan, this year’s recipient of the Niagara Construction Association’s (NCA) industry leadership award, has devoted countless hours to both industry and community activities.
“It’s important to give back to the community,” says McKiernan, vice-president of finance at Welland-headquartered Timbro Design-Build Contractors. “While volunteerism is time-consuming, it’s also very rewarding.”
McKiernan was recognized for his efforts at the association’s recent awards of construction excellence gala.
“I’m really honoured,” he said. “I didn’t really expect this. There are probably a lot of people out there who are more deserving.”
McKiernan, who joined Timbro in 2000, has sat on the NCA’s board of directors for a number of years. The current treasurer, he has also headed the safety committee, reporting to the board at its monthly meetings on safety-related matters.
For the past four years, McKiernan has been in charge of the finance and property lease committee.
In this capacity, he reviews financial data, oversees development of the NCA’s annual budget, manages the association’s investments and supervises the renewal of property and equipment leases.
For the past 10 years, McKiernan has sat on the labour-management committee of the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association. He has received two Gil Samson awards for his efforts in the safety realm.
At Timbro, he has served as safety director and managed the company’s safety group. Timbro last year applied to become COR-certified. McKiernan said Timbro is in the final stages of achieving certification.
In the community, McKiernan has been active since 1994 in the St. Catharines Kiwanis Club. He has twice served as president and assisted in numerous fundraising initiatives. He also played an instrumental role in getting a new 40-unit Kiwanis apartment project built in St. Catharines.
The recipient of many Kiwanis awards, McKiernan was the driving force in planning and implementation of the club’s television bingo fundraising program, which has allowed the organization to support the Kiwanis aquatics centre and other projects.
McKiernan recently received the Niagara Region’s T. Roy Adams humanitarian of the year award.
He also was the recipient of a Diamond Jubilee medal, created to mark the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the throne.
