Contractors from across Canada are poised to meet in Winnipeg in mid-September for the 72nd annual national conference of the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada. The theme of this year’s event is “Winds of Change.”
Retiring association chair Brad Diggens of MJS Mechanical Ltd. of Calgary says the theme symbolizes “our ever-changing industry and the challenges and opportunities we all will experience in the very near future.”
On the agenda for the Sept. 25-28 event are a mix of educational programs, workshops and social events for both delegates, guests and companions alike. Keynote speaker at the opening breakfast is David Chilton, author of The Wealthy Barber and a dragon on CBC TV’s Dragons’ Den.
Also on the program are four educational sessions.
Prof. Awad Hanna of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a consultant to the construction industry will focus on best practices for the mechanical construction industry. Such practices include proper project tracking to enable contractors to detect early warning signs for project distress, proper pre-construction planning, material handling and purchasing practices and change management.
Gloria Auchey, president of SIA Inc., a consulting and training company, will focus on personality profiling.
The goal of the presentation is to provide mechanical contractors with an important tool to allow them to place the proper people on the proper jobs.
Author and certified speaking professional Jerry Teplitz, president of Teplitz Enterprises Inc., is slated to deliver two presentations. They are entitled: increasing your management power to new levels of excellence, a training program designed to increase productivity and promote team-building; and speeding to effective time mastery — working smarter, not harder.
“With the complexities of the business world today there never seems to be enough time to accomplish everything we need to do,” the association says in a session description.
“Through this program, participants will discover their own time management strengths and weaknesses, leading to the development of a personal, effective time management strategy.”
Also at the conference, the Mechanical Service Contractors of Canada is hosting an energy services forum. Speakers are Steve Horwood of Black and McDonald and Alan Sutton of Stantec Consulting Inc.
Various awards will be presented at the annual Mechanical Contractors Network breakfast.
The association represents close to 1,000 companies across Canada.
